Common Names: Alocasia, Elephant's Ear
Latin Name: Alocasia spp.
Description: Common name for about 8 species of large herbs
from tropical Asia and Polynesia. Plant is named for its leaves which
can reach up to 1m (40 inches) in length in some of the species.
Several species are grown as house and garden plants. Like other members
of the arum family, elephant's ear plants contain calcium oxalate, which
produces a burning sensation and sometimes swelling in the mouth and throat
if the leaves are eaten.
Poisonous Parts: Leaves, stems. Plant raphides irritate
mouth.
Symptoms: Oral, pharyngeal and esophogal irritant.
Salivation and edema (swelling). Vomiting, drooling, diarrhea, abdominal
pain, cramps, swelling around the mouth, difficulty breathing. May
cause tremors, heart and respiratory and/or kidney problems which are difficult
for an owner to detect.
Treatment: Unless your cat is unconscious or having convulsions,
induce vomiting. Get immediate veterinary
assistance.
