Latin Name: Lobelia inflata, Lobelioideaea inflata
(Lobelioideae subfamily of the Bellflower family)
Description: Herb producing an acrid milky sap known as latex.
Tubular flowers with five petals. Color varies depending on variety
from red to blue or violet. Indian Tobacco is a tall annual with light
blue flowers and small petals. Cardinal flowers have red flowers.
Poisonous Parts: Leaves, stems, fruit. Contains
alkaloid Lobeline. Also contains pyridine, a nicotine-like toxin.
Symptoms: Vomiting and diarrhea. Affects nervous system
and can also cause dermatitis.
