Latin Name: Gelsemium, Jasminum, Gelsemium sempervirens
Description: Climbing vine that grows up to 40 feet high
with yellow flowers about 1 inch in size and 8 flaring petals. Lance-shaped,
paired leaves.
Poisonous Parts: Whole plant. Contains an alkaloid
similar to strychnine. Convulsants include indole.
Symptoms: Produces varied toxic effects including convulsions
and dermatitis. Can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps, and diarrhea.
Treatment: Unless your cat is unconscious or having convulsions,
induce vomiting and follow procedures to delay
absorption and speed elimination. Get prompt veterinary assistance.
