Latin Name: Rhododendron macrophyllum (Ericaceae)
Description: Perennial shrubs with tough, glossy, smooth-margined
evergreen leaves. Large showy flowers in terminal clusters with 5
white, pink or red petals. Occasionally yellow or orange petals.
Poisonous Parts: All parts, especially leaves. Moderate
toxicity. Contains grayanotoxins (glycosides) that affect gastrointestinal
and cardiovascular systems. Gastrointestinal signs appear within
6 hours.
Symptoms: Causes vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps, and diarrhea.
Stomach irritation, abdominal pain, abnormal heart rate and rhythm, convulsions,
coma, death.
Treatment: Unless your cat is unconscious or having convulsions,
induce vomiting and follow procedures to delay
absorption and speed elimination. Get prompt veterinary assistance.
