Known As: Crab's Eye, Jequirity Pea, Precatory Pea or Beans, Rosary
Pea, Roseary Pea
Latin Name: Abrus precatorius
Description: A vine growing up to 10 feet high with clusters
of rose pink or purple flowers from 1/2-3/4 inch long. Divided leaves
and brown seedpods containing shiny, red and black seeds and about 5-8
mm long. Seeds are often imported on necklaces and other decorative
items.
Poisonous Parts: Seeds which contain the chemical abrin
and toxalbumins. Highly toxic. One seed can kill.
Symptoms: Severe gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea,
abdominal pain, collapse, death.
Treatment: Contact your veterinarian. Emergency measures may
be used to eliminate the toxin from the stomach and intestines. However,
once gastrointestinal signs appear, it may be inadvisable to try to evacuate
the stomach and intestines for fear of doing even greater damage, but your
veterinarian will decide this. Beyond this, care is symptomatic and supportive
of the digestive upset, weakness, and shock. Affected animals are likely
to die even with care.
