Latin Name: Symplocarpus foetidus
Description: Larege net-veined leaves which may have white or
colored spots. Flower is a fleshy green, white, pr yellow sapdix
9spike) inside a spathe (or wrap-around hood). Fruit is brightly
colored berries in tight clusters.
Poisonous Parts: Roots, leaves, stems. Moderate
toxicity. Plant contains needle-like crystals of isoluble calcium
oxalate which penetrates the skin and mouth causing discomfort. Plants
also contain proteolytic enzymes which release histamine and kinins that
cause swelling and an itching or burning sensation.
Symptoms: Oral, pharyngeal and esophogal irritant.
Salivation and edema (swelling). Vomiting and diarrhea.
Treatment: Unless your cat is unconscious or having convulsions,
induce vomiting and follow procedures to delay
absorption and speed elimination. Get prompt veterinary assistance
if the cat doesn't improve within a few minutes, or if swallowing or breathing
is impaired.
