Our Cats
|
|||||||||||||
The
first Our Cats periodicals were published weekly
starting November 1st 1899. The British Newspaper Library
has a collection of them from November 1st 1899 to July 13
1900. At a later point in time Our Cats
reappears as a monthly publication. The original Our
Cats talked about shows, cats, and had many letters to
the editor and articles debating issues of the time. When it
reappears as a monthly publication, the articles still report on
shows and cats but there are more articles about how to breed,
veterinary advances and a focus on the genetics involved with the
cat fancy. Here are copies of the later periodicals that we
have been able to locate: |

HARRISON
WEIR Considered the Father of the Cat Fancy, Harrison Weir judged the first cat show at London's Crystal Palace in 1871 organized by Fred Wilson, the Crystal Palace naturalist. Harrison Weir wrote the standards by which the cats were judged and served as one of the 3 judges, along with his brother John Jenner Weir. Harrison Weir also founded the National Cat Club in 1887 which served as a registry until 1910. |

In
addition to my own scans the following people have provided
scans from their libraries and have my sincere thanks in helping
complete this project:
If you can help with earlier or later issues we'd love to hear from you. Please email us so together we can preserve this piece of cat fancy heritage. |
